Petition For Parent Friendly

Petition For Parent FriendlyGreat idea, however can the government really help here?

I, like many of you, have seen (and signed) a petition doing the rounds calling upon Kate Ellis MP, Federal Minster for Employment Participation, to create a job category called “parent friendly”. This request has stemmed from the sharp increase in parents looking for work as a result of the reassignment of 80,000 Parenting Payment recipients to Newstart payments on 1st January, 2013.

With our business completely focused on connecting Australian parents with “parent friendly” or “family friendly” employers, we agree that Australia is overdue for a parent friendly push.  There does need to be more parent friendly jobs created and made available by Australian employers and a simpler way for parents to access these, but we’re not sure how much influence the Federal Government can have over that.

In terms of parent friendly job creation, while the Federal Government could theoretically set targets for Australian employers to adhere to, an education campaign educating Australian employers that workplace flexibility provides for a better bottom line might be money better spent.  We’re not against legislation, but we believe that it’s easier to pull a piece of string than push it, if you catch my drift.  Once this belief is established, Australian employers will naturally offer more flexibility.

Once there are more “family friendly employers”, family friendly job opportunities will increase too.  Then it’s a simple matter of making “parent friendly” positions as easy to find as a 9 to 5 ones.  Again this isn’t the responsibility of the Federal Government, it lies with companies advertising available positions like Seek, MyCareer and by the end of this month, us,  We’re proud to be Australia’s only dedicated “family friendly” job search site (there are mum sites, lifestyle sites and even part-time sites, but surprisingly no one yet caters for both mums and dads!).

As the parent friendly petition suggests, finding a parent friendly or school hours role is hard work – “Thousands of jobs are advertised every day, and searching through them is an exhausting task”.  We thought the same and that is what prompted us to create  With all our job advertisements to provide some form of flexibility, job search information and articles relevant to parents, we’re aiming to be Australia’s most trusted resource for parents looking for flexible employment.

After all, flexibility is the new black. It is being embraced by employers all around the world as a way to attract and retain good employees, parents and otherwise.  Flexibility has long been attributed to positive outcomes for both employers and employees.  From better productivity and a more loyal and efficient workforce for employers to better health, more job satisfaction and even better romance and relationships for employees (it’s true – read the article here).

If you are one of the 80,000 Parenting Payment recipients effected by this change, register with us today and when we go live later this month, we’ll let you know of high quality parent friendly roles, from high quality parent friendly employers.  If you know someone effected, please share this article with them and have them share it with their friends.  The more people that register, the more jobs we’ll list and the more chance we’ll advertise your dream job, your family friendly dream job.
